Did they wear World War II helmets during the Vietnam War?

 Do you remember this part?

Let me share a little secret: the U.S. government has many warehouses across the country filled with all kinds of items.

In 1981, I was part of a cleanup crew at a small warehouse at Offutt Air Force Base that flooded when a water pipe burst. My team and I had to sort through everything.

We unpacked and counted thousands of items that were stored away. Since these items were meant for quick use, I focused on putting together as many complete kits as possible.

What did we find? We discovered World War II arctic gear, mess kits, and silverware. I was surprised to see spoons marked 'U.S. 1942.'

So, yes, they were using World War II helmets, but we also found clothing, mess kits, and silverware from that time.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they still have those mess kits and spoons today.

**Note:** I know all about C-Rations, K-Rations, and MREs. They used to sell surplus K-Rations at the Offutt commissary for cheap, and each one came with a P-38 can opener. Those mess kits and silverware? They’ll probably last for another century or two.

**Aside:** Honestly, I doubt you could cook a chicken in one of those new helmets!
